The apple eater by Tarek Ali Hassan

(a perennial drama in search of OSIRIS)
being a very slow cummulative critique of pure reason, mathematics and automated non-interactive certainty)

(Act1 )

Year 0 minus33 .000?

...and was born
an apple eater..
and was born he who ate the forbidden fruit
and was loved
by the good

and the "good" could not love
BECAUSE they were "good"
and he was born an apple eater
and it does not become the good
to grow apple eaters

and was told of the guilt
the guilt of the apple eater
the cause of all pain
suffering
disease
separation, loss and calamity
...and he believed
for he was born
so true

and KNEW the guilt
for he believed
the guilt ..
of the apple eater
the guilt ..
of being born ..
an eater of the forbidden fruit
the guilt of being born

he was born infected with the virus of curiosity, research and perpetual growth
A new creative response to the dilemma of survival

..and was modified
what can not be modified

..and LET be modified and modified
what can not be modified..

and was led
and chose to be led
and needed to be led
and led .. others of his kind ..
onto the road
to peace ....
for at times
he had known of the price
of life: I mean eating the forbidden fruit
and was afraid

(The next Act)

... but was born again AN APPLE EATER ...

? a genetic fluke that must surely be corrected in this age of GM?and anti-viral agents

and was immediately sucked into intensive care
and was saved

by the prophets, divination, priests, education, socialisation,automation and pasturisation
and was saved by ritual
by the law .... and reason
and was saved by wisdom ...
... and believed he was saved and knew the peace
of salvation

and the law encircled him in a fatal embrace seeming liberation
and he did not know it ..
and the priests
the pundits
the wise
sucked dry all questioning in his heart
and he did not know it

it was all to keep the peace
and they did enforce a peace .. of sorts

and counter to the many teachings of Osiris
weapons were invented and used
not for hunting or planting
but for head hunting and beating

a novel way to keep the peace had been discovered
a novel way to prove the truth

a sort of peace
a sort of truth

he was thus allowed some peace
protected from his tormenting apple eating self

and the “Saviour” said:
I am the way the truth and the life
And they would not hear
and they would not delve into the self for to understand
they rushed to the protection of an easier weapons-made peace

and it was a fatal peace...
it was a fatal turn
and he did not know it
he would not know of it

and even when pursued by ghosts
he would not understand

dark dark doubts pursued him
centuries too late

"me no understand"
“me did not understand”

this was the easy way

and the history of his peace was always marked, inexplicably
by blood, violence and unspeakable hurt

Ecce homo

I am guiltless, you are all guiltless absolved!
Find the miraculous center, the resolution of all contradictions
the balance point to harmonious justice
this is the real struggle demanding heroes great

And the bloodied Saviour told his tormentors who would not know or understand:
“I man, naked and alive, am the truth, the way and the life!”
“Know the truth and the truth shall make you free”
but they would not delve into the self!
that theatre of war was to prove the most terrifying of all

"me, no understand"
“me, no hear, no see, no speak”

and on all warring sides
all factions affirm their universal truth:
the race of apple eaters is evil
KNOW THYSELF
KNOW THE TRUTH alive and it shall make you free
The futile echo grows fainter and yet more faint as history affirms with deafening evidence

apple eaters ARE
creatures of unspeakable evil
we and only we have the solution and resolution of this calamity
this harm

and again was perfected
all manner of machinery
for to cut up, restrict and reduce
for to dry and dye and spy and try
the apple eater

and overwhelmed by all this glorious achievement
suffocated by all this monumental deafness
he died
and did not know it
for as he died, the celebration music was too loud and boisterous
it was martial, erotic, sadistic and aggressively dull
the sort of surround music that makes you dumb, numb and deaf for life
and it announced incessantly
with all manner
of electronic enhancement:

hurrah for dyeing, destroying, lying, spying,
buying, selling, profiteering, re-buying
HP toads lizards ants cockroaches mice rats,paper and rice
survival at any price
Hard dutiful work for the state makes free, peaceful and safe

he HAD been made peaceful and free (after a fashion)
and was given a new and artificial tongue
and a mechanical heart
for he had been made
a rational being
and a wise being
and a reasonable being
and REASONED that this peace was good..
and his state was right, upright and free

he was now able to rationalise
ANYTHING justify EVERYTHING

He reasoned with perfect logic that he and his were always right

easier to die before to die
for fear of to die or hurt?

The “Saviour” said “…

Osiris said: ...

shut up
what gibberish!

and built a world of substitutes and look-alikes
and built it higher still
for his reason was good
and right
and logical ...
it was reasonable ...

and the material world obeyed his reason
sometimes

invent all manner of tormentation
for to exorcise and save this devil-ridden race of apple eaters

The twentieth century

and it came to pass that the most good of all the world
strengthened as never before
by glorious application, science and automation
killed half the seed of Europe one by one
obeying orders automatically: It was an age of discipline, progress and automation
then they all proceeded to kill the next generation again
even before the first flood of blood was drained, dried, hidden or washed away
then proceeded to visit the process -I mean- the progress
on a bewildered and guilty south
and north and west and east again and again

the “Saviour” is affirming the sin and claims innocence!

Escape into science and cyber-space

and then they all gathered in the lab
around the magical tt
they doctored again the whole process
of conception, birth and pre-conception
BUT WAS BORN AGAIN AN APPLE EATER....
and they ran hysterically
or ran rationally
for to quarantine the damned thing with the latest anti-virus software
they all ran
to the eager embrace of pure reason and logic
they ran for to modify
the creature
for to cause the creature
to be reborn a rational being
and a legal being
and a good being
and a right being
a safe being

BUT WAS BORN AGAIN AN APPLE EATER .....
and reason would have said .. and said
DO NOT EAT THE APPLE
DO NOT DELVE INTO THE FORBIDDEN AREAS

and logic and wisdom
and necessity
but he ate the apple and happened

as he was kicked out of his Heaven womb for some mysterious and terrible crime
he was guilt-ridden and terrified .....and RAN

and the elders too, affirmed the guilt and ran
faster
and reasoned their way
faster, faster, and yet faster into unspeakable and escalating violence
